We have reached the last days of Jumada al-Awwal 1448. If the moon is sighted, Jumada al-Thani (also called Jumada al-Akhirah) is expected to begin around 11 November 2026. Over this month, we travelled together through the Islamic calendar, the heroes of Mu'tah, the White Days, Fridays and much more. Today, let's look back and prepare for the month ahead.
What We Learned This Month
- The Islamic calendar is lunar and began with the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ.
- Jumada al-Awwal is the month of the Battle of Mu'tah, where Zayd ibn Harithah, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah were martyred and Khalid ibn al-Walid became "the Sword of Allah".
- The White Days (13th–15th) and Mondays and Thursdays are Sunnah fasting days.
- Friday is the best day of the week, with Surah Al-Kahf, salawat and the hour of acceptance.
- Good character, kindness to parents and praying on time are among the most beloved deeds to Allah.
A Family Review
Sit together and ask:
- Which story or lesson did you like most this month?
- Did we achieve the small goal we set at the start of the month?
- What is one thing we want to do better next month?
Looking Ahead: Jumada al-Thani
Jumada al-Thani is the sixth month of the Islamic year. After it comes Rajab, one of the four sacred months, then Sha'ban, and then Ramadan. Many people use these months as a gradual build-up to Ramadan:
- Jumada al-Thani: build daily habits – Quran, adhkar, prayer on time.
- Rajab: increase good deeds and avoid sins in this sacred month.
- Sha'ban: increase voluntary fasting, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
- Ramadan: enter it ready and strong.
Goals for Jumada al-Thani
- Kids: memorise one new surah and learn the names of all 12 Islamic months.
- Teens: fast at least one White Day and read one page of Quran every day.
- Adults: improve one Tajweed rule a week, or begin a Ramadan reading plan.
Watch for the Moon
On the evening of the 29th of Jumada al-Awwal (around 9 November 2026), look for the new crescent after sunset and say the du'a:
اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْيُمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ، وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ
(Jami' at-Tirmidhi, 3451)
