At the end of the Battle of Mu'tah, which took place in Jumada al-Awwal 8 AH, the Prophet ﷺ gave one of his companions a famous title: "Sayfullah" – the Sword of Allah. That companion was Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). Today, the 15th of Jumada al-Awwal, let's learn about this remarkable man.
From Opponent to Defender
Khalid was from the Quraysh tribe and was a skilled horseman and military leader. Before accepting Islam, he fought against the Muslims – at the Battle of Uhud, his quick action changed the course of the battle. But Allah opened his heart, and around 8 AH he travelled to Madinah and accepted Islam, together with 'Amr ibn al-'As.
The Prophet ﷺ welcomed him warmly. Khalid's story shows that Allah can guide anyone, and that a person's past does not have to define their future.
Earning the Title "Sword of Allah"
Just a few months after becoming Muslim, Khalid joined the army sent to Mu'tah. After the three appointed commanders – Zayd, Ja'far and 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah – were martyred, the Muslims chose Khalid to lead. He reorganised the army and, with smart tactics, brought them back safely from a very dangerous situation.
In Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ described what happened and said the flag was taken by "one of the swords of Allah" and that Allah granted them victory (Sahih al-Bukhari, 4262).
Humble Even When Removed from Command
Later, during the caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, Khalid was removed from the position of commander-in-chief. 'Umar wanted people to know that victory comes from Allah, not from one person. Khalid accepted the decision and continued to serve as a soldier. He fought for Allah, not for position or fame.
