Weekends are precious for Muslim families living in the USA, Canada and the UK. During the week, school and work take most of our time. On Saturday and Sunday, we finally have a chance to slow down – and to fill our homes with the remembrance of Allah, family time and fun. Here is a simple weekend routine that works for children and adults.
Saturday Morning: Start with Fajr Together
It is tempting to sleep in on weekends, but praying Fajr together sets the tone for the whole day. After Fajr:
- Read the morning adhkar together (5 minutes).
- Read or listen to one page of Quran.
- Then, if you like, rest a little before a family breakfast.
Late Morning: Learn Something Together
- Read a story of a prophet or companion.
- Learn one new du'a or one short surah.
- Older children can attend their online Quran or Islamic Studies class.
Afternoon: Move and Serve
Islam values strong, healthy bodies. Go to the park, ride bikes, play football or go hiking. Then do one act of service as a family:
- Bake something for neighbours.
- Volunteer at the masjid or a food bank.
- Visit grandparents or a sick relative.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people." (reported by at-Tabarani; graded hasan by Shaykh al-Albani)
Evening: Masjid and Family
- Pray Maghrib or 'Isha at the masjid when possible – children love being part of the community.
- Have a "screen-free" family dinner.
- Play an Islamic quiz game: Islamic months, prophets, surahs.
Sunday: Plan the Week
Sunday evening is the perfect time to prepare for the week ahead:
- Check the Islamic calendar – any Sunnah fasting days (Monday/Thursday, White Days)?
- Schedule Quran classes and homework time.
- Set one small family goal for the week – e.g. "pray Fajr on time every day".
Keep It Balanced
A good Islamic weekend is not only "religious activities". Fun, rest and play are also part of a healthy Muslim life – especially for children. The key is that Allah is remembered throughout the day and that time is not wasted.
